Most species live in southern China and Indochina. They can be small shrubs or tall trees. Some can even grow up to 15 meters high.

Many camellias are useful to people. One type is called *Camellia sinensis*.

People process its leaves to make tea. This tea is sold and drunk all over the world. Another type is *Camellia oleifera*. It produces tea seed oil. People use this oil for cooking and for cosmetics.

The colors are often white, pink, or red. Truly yellow flowers only grow in Vietnam and South China. Most flowers have a bright cluster of yellow stamens. These are the parts that hold pollen. The color of the petals tells us who visits them. Red or yellow flowers attract sunbirds. White flowers are often smaller and attract bees.

Scientists have studied these plants for a long time. Carl Linnaeus described the genus in 1753.

He named it after a botanist named Georg Joseph Kamel. In 2022, researchers used a phylogenetic study to group them. This is a way of looking at how plants are related. They found 161 species and split them into seven sections. One section is called *Camellia sect. Camellia*. Others include *Chrysantha* and *Thea*.

We can even find clues about camellias from the past. Fossils show us where they used to live.

There are leaf fossils from the Eocene in Japan. There are also fossils from the Oligocene in Bulgaria. You can even find fossil wood from Washington in the United States.
