It belongs to a group of plants called Lamiaceae. This tree is a deciduous type, which means it can lose its leaves. It often grows in mixed hardwood forests. The wood from this tree is famous for being very strong. It is also very good at resisting water.

This makes it a special kind of hardwood. Many people look for teak because it lasts a long time.

The way a teak tree grows involves many interesting steps. In the summer, from June to August, it grows small white flowers. These flowers grow in thick clusters called panicles.

Insects like bees often visit these flowers to help them make seeds. This is called being insect-pollinated. After the flowers, the tree sets fruit between September and December. The fruit is round and small. To grow new trees from seeds, people must first wake the seeds up. They soak the seeds in water for 12 hours and then dry them in the sun. They repeat this for many days until the seeds are ready to grow.

People have studied and used teak for a very long time. The name teak comes from a word used by Portuguese speakers. It was first used in the English language in the 1690s. A scientist named Carl Linnaeus the Younger first described the tree in 1782. Later, in 1975, Harold Norman Moldenke wrote about different forms of the tree. He found that some teak trees have more hairs on their leaves than others. These small differences help scientists tell the different types apart.

Teak grows in many different places around the world. It is native to South and Southeast Asia. This includes countries like India, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Myanmar actually has nearly half of all the natural teak in the world. The tree can live in many kinds of weather. It can grow in dry areas or in very wet forests. Some teak is also grown on large farms called plantations. Many of these plantations are found in Indonesia. In India, there is a place called Nilambur that has the oldest teak plantation.

You can see the use of teak in many everyday objects. Because the wood has natural oils, it does not rot easily in the rain. This makes it perfect for building boats and boat decks.

The U.S. Navy even used teak on the USS Missouri battleship. It is also used for outdoor furniture and beautiful indoor floors. If you leave teak outside in the sun, it will turn a silvery-grey color. Some people even use the large leaves to help steam food in certain parts of Asia. It is a truly useful tree for many different jobs.
