They belong to a larger group called eudicots. This group includes over 8,000 different species. You can find them in almost every part of the world. Some families live in warm tropical areas. Other families live in cold Arctic regions. They can be tall trees or small bushes. Some even grow as lianas, which are climbing vines.

These plants have many interesting ways to live. Many species have five petals. These petals often grow together into one shape. Some plants in this group are even carnivorous. This means they catch and eat insects. Others are mycoheterotrophic. These plants lack green parts to make food. Instead, they get energy from fungi in the soil. Many Ericales also have special links with fungi. Scientists call these links mycorrhiza.

Scientists have studied how these plants changed over time. Molecular studies show how they grew. This group split from other plants a long time ago. It happened about 127 million years ago. The plants may have diversified 110 million years ago. This is a very old lineage of plants. They are part of an early group called asterids.

There are 22 different families in the Ericales. The APG IV system is the way scientists classify them. One huge family is Ericaceae. It has between 2,000 and 4,000 species. The Theaceae family is very important too. It includes the tea plant, known as Camellia sinensis. Other families include the Sapotaceae and the Ebenaceae. Some families can even collect a lot of aluminum.

Many Ericales are part of our daily lives. You might drink tea in the morning. You might eat a blueberry or a cranberry. Some people eat kiwifruit or persimmons. The Brazil nut is another tasty fruit. The shea tree is very vital for many people. Millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa use it for food. Many people also grow them as pretty flowers. You might see azaleas or rhododendrons in a garden.
