This group has over 8,000 different species. They live all over the world. Some live in the warm tropics. Others live in very cold places. You can find them as tall trees or small bushes. Some are even vines that climb.

Many plants in this group are useful to people. You might drink tea made from them. Some grow tasty fruits like blueberries and kiwifruit. People also eat persimmons and Brazil nuts. The shea tree is very important too. Millions of people in Africa use it for food.

Many of these plants have pretty flowers. Many have five petals. These petals often grow together. Some plants in this group are very unusual. Some are carnivorous plants. This means they catch bugs for food. Others lack green parts to make food.

Scientists say this group split from other plants long ago. This happened about 127 million years ago. The group has 22 families. One big family is Ericaceae. It has up to 4,000 species.
