Ericaceae is a large family of flowering plants. People often call them the heath or heather family. This group has about 4,250 known species. You might know some of them already. Blueberries and cranberries are part of this family. Rhododendrons and azaleas are also in this group. These plants can grow in many ways. Some are small herbs. Others are shrubs or even big trees. Many have leaves that stay green all year.

These plants are very tough. They often grow in poor soil. This soil is often acidic. Acidic soil means it has a low pH. Many of these plants live in wet peat bogs. To survive, they use a special trick. They work with fungi in the soil. This is called a mycorrhizal relationship. The fungi live near the plant roots. The fungi help the plant get nutrients from the poor soil. This helps the plants grow even in hard places.

Many of these plants grow in places called heathlands. These are open areas with many small shrubs. These lands are common in Europe. Many insects and reptiles live in these habitats too.
