This group of plants is called Vaccinium. It includes blueberries, cranberries, and huckleberries. There are about 450 different kinds of these plants. Most live in cool areas in the Northern Hemisphere. Some even grow in tropical places like Hawaii.

These plants like to grow in acidic soil. This means the soil is sour. This soil often lacks food for plants. To help, these plants have special roots. These roots work with tiny fungi to find nitrogen and phosphorus. These are important nutrients that help plants grow.

Some Vaccinium plants stay low to the ground. Others grow into tall shrubs. Their flowers can look like small bells. Many berries are bright red or blue. The seeds inside are small and smooth.

Animals need these berries for food. Many birds and mammals eat them. For example, grizzly bears love to eat them. Some insects even eat the leaves. These plants are very useful to many living things.
