The Myrtaceae family is a large group of plants.

It has about 5,950 different species. These plants are mostly woody. They also contain essential oils. These oils give the plants a strong scent.

Most of these plants have leaves that stay green all year. These leaves are simple and often have smooth edges. The flowers usually have many bright parts called stamens. These parts are very easy to see. Some flowers have five petals. Others may have very small petals or none at all.

Many famous plants are in this family. Eucalyptus is a very big group. One type, Eucalyptus regnans, is the tallest flowering plant in the world. Guava and clove are also members. Some plants in this group have fleshy fruit. Others have dry fruit called capsules.

Scientists think this family started 60 to 56 million years ago. Old pollen fossils were found on a land mass called Gondwana. As that land broke apart, the plants spread to new places. This helped them change into many new kinds. Today, these plants grow in many warm parts of the world.
