Eucalyptus are a big group of flowering plants.

Most species are trees, but some are shrubs. Most grow in Australia. They are often called gum trees.

These plants have many different looks. Their bark can be smooth or very rough. Some bark is stringy and can be pulled in long pieces. Other bark is hard and has thick grooves. Eucalyptus leaves have oil glands. These glands make oils.

The flowers are easy to spot. They have many fluffy stamens. These are the parts that look like fuzzy hair. In a bud, a cap called an operculum covers the flower. The name eucalyptus comes from Greek words meaning "well covered." When the flower grows, it pushes the cap off.

After flowering, the plant makes woody fruit. People call these gumnuts. They are shaped like small cones. The gumnuts have valves at the end. These valves open to let out tiny seeds.
