life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some plants live in warm lands. They grow from West Africa to the Pacific. We call this group Pandanaceae. It has 982 known species. These plants can be tall trees. They can also be shrubs or vines. Some grow on other plants. These are called epiphytes.

Many of these plants have long, thin leaves. The edges of the leaves are often prickly. Some plants have roots that grow in the air. These are called aerial prop roots.

These plants have small flowers. They are dioecious. This means male and female flowers are on different plants. The fruits can be berries or drupes. A drupe is a type of fruit.

People use these plants in many ways. Some use the leaves to make food taste good. Other people use them to make mats. One important group is called Pandanus. Some Pandanus species are sources of food. They might be used for fruit or flavor. Scientists study their DNA to learn about them. This helps them see how the plants are related.
