Most grow in warm, tropical places. Some can be very big. The Indian banyan can cover over a hectare of land. Other types stay very small. One kind stays under one meter tall.

Most figs have a special part called a syconium. This is a hollow, fleshy shape like a jar. It holds many tiny flowers on the inside. To make seeds, the plant needs help from tiny wasps. These wasps crawl through a small hole at the top.

This is a way they help each other. The wasp pollinates the flowers and lays eggs. This is called mutualism. This means both the plant and the wasp benefit.

Figs are very important for food. Many animals eat them. Fruit bats, monkeys, and birds love figs.

Some birds might eat figs almost all the time. Because so many animals eat them, figs are a key part of the forest.
