Moraceae

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Moraceae family includes many different plants. They are often called the fig or mulberry family. This group has over 1,100 species. Some are giant trees like the Indian Banyan. Others are very small plants. One tiny plant is only 2 to 5 cm wide.

Most of these plants live in warm, tropical places. However, they can be found all over the world. A common trait is milky sap. This is a white liquid inside the stems and leaves.

Many people know these plants by their fruit. You might eat a fig or a mulberry. You might also eat a jackfruit or breadfruit.

The flowers in this family are often small. Some flowers use the wind to spread pollen. Other flowers use insects to do this work. The shape of the stamen helps decide how this happens. If the stamen is straight, insects usually help. If it is bent, the wind might carry it. Leaves can also look very different on one tree. For example, a red mulberry can have many leaf shapes at once.
