These plants have many names. People call them tailflowers or flamingo flowers. They have small flowers on a spike called a spadix. A leaf-like part called a spathe sits beneath the spike. The spathe can be flat or curved. It may even cover the spike like a hood.

Many people grow them as houseplants. They like shady spots and moist soil. Some have large, velvety leaves. Breeders make new kinds with bright colors. Only two species have bright red spathes.

Be careful with these plants. They are toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. Every part of the plant can cause harm. They contain calcium oxalate crystals. These crystals can cause pain and swelling in the mouth. They can also cause vomiting. Keep them away from pets to stay safe.
