People often call them knotweed or buckwheat. This family has about 1,200 different species. They grow all over the world. Most of them live in the North Temperate Zone.

Many of these plants are small weeds. Others can grow into big trees, shrubs, or vines. Many have stems with swollen parts called nodes. A special part of these plants is the ochrea. This is a thin sheath that wraps around the stem.

Humans use many plants in this family for food. You can eat buckwheat seeds or make flour from them. People also eat the stems of rhubarb. In Florida, people make jelly from sea grape fruit.

Some plants even provide wood for building.

Scientists study these plants using DNA. This helps them group plants by how they are related. For example, they found that some groups belong together. This helps us understand the history of life on Earth.
