Lamiaceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Many plants belong to a big group called Lamiaceae. People often call these plants mints, sages, or deadnettles. This group is very large. It has about 6,900 to 7,534 different species. These plants grow all over the world.

Many of these plants have a strong scent. We use them as herbs in our food. You might eat basil, mint, or oregano. Some are used as medicine, like catnip. Some plants in this group are small. Others can grow into shrubs or even big trees.

There are special ways to spot these plants. Their stems are often shaped like a square. Their leaves often grow in pairs. The pairs sit at right angles to each other. This pattern is called decussate. The flowers are also unique. They have petals that join together. This makes an upper lip and a lower lip. This is why some people call the group Labiatae. This name comes from a Latin word for lip. Most scientists now use the name Lamiaceae instead.
