It grows in many places. It is native to Europe and parts of Asia. It also grows in Africa and the Americas. The plant has long, wide leaves. The tips of the leaves are pointy. This is why it is called "spear" mint.

The stems are shaped like a square. This is a trait of the mint family. Spearmint grows from thick roots under the soil. These roots are called rhizomes. They spread out wide in the dirt.

People use spearmint in many ways. They use the leaves for tea or food. They also use a special oil from the plant. This oil has a part called carvone. Carvone gives the plant its scent. People use this oil in toothpaste and candy. It is even used in soaps.

In the summer, the plant grows pink or white flowers. These flowers grow on long, thin spikes. The name spicata means "bearing a spike." Spearmint likes to grow in wet places like swamps. It grows well in sun or shade.
