Lamiaceae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Lamiaceae family is a huge group of flowering plants. You might know them as mints, sages, or deadnettles. These plants are very important to people everywhere. Many of them have a strong, pleasant smell. We use many of these plants as culinary herbs. You might eat basil, rosemary, or oregano in your meals. Some are used as traditional medicines, like catnip or bee balm. Most are small plants, but some can be shrubs or trees.

There are special ways to recognize these plants. Their stems are often shaped like a square. This means if you cut the stem, it looks like a box. Their leaves often grow in pairs. These pairs sit at right angles to the pair below them. This pattern is called decussate. The flowers are also very unique. They have five petals that are joined together. This creates an upper lip and a lower lip. This is why some call the family Labiatae.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these plants. In the 1990s, they looked closely at how they are related. They used phylogenetic studies to learn about their family trees. These studies showed that some plants belong in Lamiaceae instead of other groups. In 2004, a big revision was published. This work described 236 different genera, which are groups of related plants. Botanists now mostly use the name Lamiaceae for this group.

This plant family is found all over the world. It is a cosmopolitan group with many different members. There are about 236 genera in the family. Some estimates say there are 6,900 to 7,200 species. Other lists say there are as many as 7,534 species. The largest group is called Salvia, which has 900 species. Other big groups include Scutellaria with 360 species and Stachys with 300 species.

We use these plants in many different ways every day. Some people grow them just to look at in gardens. Plants like coleus are grown to be ornamental. We also grow them to eat. Some plants provide seeds, like Salvia hispanica, which is chia. Other plants give us edible tubers, like the Chinese artichoke. Many people grow them from stem cuttings because it is easy. This makes them very popular to grow at home.
