Scientists call this group Mentha. They belong to a larger family called Lamiaceae. This family includes other famous herbs like basil, rosemary, and sage. There are between 18 and 24 different species in the Mentha group. However, it is sometimes hard to tell them apart. This is because different types often mix together in nature. These mixtures are called hybrids.

Mints have a very specific way they grow. They are mostly perennial herbs, which means they live for many years. Most mints have square stems that grow straight up. They also have leaves that grow in opposite pairs. These leaves can be dark green, purple, or even pale yellow.

Mints love to live in wet places like rivers or lakes. They spread very quickly using runners. These are long parts that grow both above and below the ground. Because they grow so fast, they can sometimes take over a garden.

The history of the name mint is quite old. The word comes from the Latin word mentha. This word comes from Greek words that mean spearmint. In Greek mythology, there was a nymph named Minthe. The stories say she was transformed into a mint plant. Scientists have also studied mint fossils for a long time. They found fossil seeds in Belarus from the Pliocene era. These ancient seeds look like modern water mint or corn mint.

Some mints have very fun names, like apple mint or chocolate mint. You might even find strawberry mint or banana mint. There are over 3,000 names that have been used for mints in the past. Many of these names were later found to be the same thing. This makes it a hard job for scientists to group them all perfectly.

You can use mint in many tasty ways. The leaves have a fresh and sweet flavor. People often use them to make mint jelly.
