The Polygonaceae are a large family of flowering plants.

You might know them as knotweed or buckwheat. This family is very important in nature and human life. It contains about 1,200 different species. These plants are spread across the whole world. Most of them live in the North Temperate Zone. Some are small weeds that grow quickly. Others are large trees, shrubs, or climbing vines.

Many of these plants have a special way they grow. Their stems often have swollen parts called nodes. Most are perennial herbaceous plants, which means they live for many years. The leaves grow in an alternating pattern on the stems. A very special feature is the ochrea. This is a thin sheath made of fused parts that wraps around the stem.

Some plants use colorful sepals instead of petals to attract attention.

People have studied these plants for a long time. Antoine Laurent de Jussieu first named the family in 1789. He wrote about them in his book, Genera Plantarum. In 1993, John Brandbyge published a large study on the family. He described 43 different genera, which are groups of related plants. Scientists still study them today using DNA sequences. This helps them see how the plants are truly related.

There are many different groups within this family. The largest group is Eriogonum, which has 240 species. Rumex is another big group with 200 species. Coccoloba has 120 species, while Persicaria has 100 species. Calligonum is also large with 80 species.

These numbers show how diverse the family is. Scientists use these names to keep track of every single type.

We use many Polygonaceae plants every single day. You might eat buckwheat seeds as groats or use them for flour. Rhubarb is another famous plant where people eat the stems. In Florida, people make jelly from the fruit of the sea grape.

Some plants, like Triplaris, even provide wood for building. Other plants, like common sorrel, are used in salads. It is amazing how many plants in this family help us.
