It has many different names. Some people call it silver beet or spinach beet. It can also be called leaf beet or seakale beet. Because it is the same species as beetroot, these names often overlap. Chard is a very nutritious plant for people to eat. It has been used in cooking for many centuries.

There are two main ways this plant grows. The Flavescens Group is often called Swiss chard. These plants have large stalks, which are the stems of the plant. The Cicla Group is a leafier type of spinach beet. The leaf blades can be green or reddish in color. The stalks are usually white, yellow, or red. Some types like 'Ruby Chard' have red ribs. 'Rainbow Chard' is a mix of many colors.

Scientists have studied chard for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first described it in 1753. He gave it the name Beta vulgaris var. cicla. Since then, its scientific rank has changed many times. It has been called a subspecies or a variety. The accepted name for all beet types is Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris. This group includes chard, sugar beet, and beetroot. Chard comes from the sea beet plant.

Growing chard is a steady process. In the Northern Hemisphere, people plant seeds between June and October. You can harvest the leaves when they are young and tender. You can also wait until they are mature and larger. The stems might be tougher when the plant is older. In the Northern Hemisphere, harvesting can start as early as April. It lasts until a hard frost hits the ground.

You can eat chard in many tasty ways. Raw leaves work well in salads or as wraps. You can also use them in stirfries or omelets. Many people boil or sauté the leaves and stalks. Cooking helps the bitter taste fade away. In the Dalmatia region of Croatia, it is called the "queen of the Dalmatian garden." Even old Jewish texts praise chard for being good for the heart and eyes.
