In its first year, the plant focuses on making a head. The leaves grow in a rosette shape and then cup inward. This creates the dense, tight head we usually eat. Most people pick the cabbage during this first year. If a farmer wants seeds, they let the plant live longer. In the second year, the plant grows tall and produces flowers.

These flowers are white or yellow and have four petals. Insects must visit the flowers to help them make seeds. This is called cross-pollination, and it is how the plant reproduces.

Humans have been eating cabbage for thousands of years.
