Cabbage is part of a plant family called Brassica. This means it is a close relative of broccoli and cauliflower.

These plants all came from one wild plant. Over a long time, people chose certain plants to grow. This helped make the large heads we see today.

Most cabbages grow a tight head in their first year. The leaves cup inward to make this shape.

If a farmer wants seeds, the plant grows for a second year. In that second year, it grows tall flowers. These flowers are white or yellow.

People have eaten cabbage for a very long time. In the Roman Empire, it was even a luxury food. Sailors used it on long trips to stay healthy. Today, China grows the most cabbage in the world. You can eat it raw, steamed, or even pickled to make kimchi.
