It is a type of wild cabbage. It is related to broccoli and kale. People call it a German turnip. This is because the stem looks like a turnip.

The stem is thick and swollen. This shape comes from a way called lateral meristem growth. This means the plant grows out to the sides. The stem can be white or purple. The purple color is only on the outside. The inside is pale yellow.

You can eat the stem and the leaves. The stem is sweet and crunchy. It can feel like a crisp apple. Many people eat it raw in a salad. You can also cook it. The stem has two tough layers. You should peel these off before you eat it.

Kohlrabi is a healthy food. It is mostly water. It has a lot of vitamin C. This helps your body stay strong. In some places, people use it in special dishes. In Kashmir, they eat it with rice. In Cyprus, they eat it with salt and lemon.
