Spinach is a leafy green plant that people love to eat. It belongs to the Amaranthaceae family. You can find it in salads or cooked in warm dishes. Some people eat it fresh, while others use canned or frozen leaves. It is an annual plant, which means it usually lives for one growing season. The leaves are very different in size depending on where they grow. Large, broad leaves appear at the bottom of the plant. Smaller leaves grow higher up on the flowering stem.

This plant has a unique way of working. Spinach is a dioecious plant. This means some plants have male flowers and others have female flowers. The flowers are small and yellow-green. They are not very easy to see. Wind helps move the pollen from one flower to another. After the flowers are pollinated, they turn into fruit. These fruits are small, hard, and lumpy clusters. Each cluster holds several tiny seeds.

By the 12th century, it reached the Iberian Peninsula. An expert named Ibn al-ʻAwwām called it the chieftain of leafy greens. In England and France, it became popular in the 14th century.
