Even though we eat them like vegetables, they are scientifically berries. The tomato belongs to the nightshade family. This family also includes tobacco, potatoes, and chili peppers. People around the world love the savory umami flavor of the fruit. It is a key ingredient in many famous foods. You might find them in pizza sauce, pasta, or even ketchup.

Tomato plants grow as vines and are mostly annual plants. This means they usually live for only one growing season. They are very sensitive to frost and need warmth to thrive. In some cases, they can live longer if grown in greenhouses. The flowers on the plant are special because they can self-fertilize. This means the plant can make seeds on its own. However, the plants must face many hard jobs to stay healthy. They are often attacked by insect pests and tiny organisms called nematodes. Diseases from viruses, mildew, and fungi can also hurt them.

Scientists think the wild ancestor was a small plant called Solanum pimpinellifolium. Later, farmers in Central America likely domesticated the plant. By 500 BCE, people were already growing them in southern Mexico. The Aztecs grew many different kinds in their markets. They had large tomatoes and small ones. They even had tomatoes that were shaped like nipples or serpents. These fruits came in many colors from bright red to deep yellow.

In the 16th century, the Spanish brought tomatoes to Europe. This happened during a time of change called the Columbian exchange.

At first, many Europeans were afraid to eat them. They thought the fruit was poisonous because of its nightshade relatives. Instead, people grew them in gardens just for their beauty. Some called them "golden apples" or "love apples." In England, a man named John Gerard wrote about them in 1597. He also believed they were poisonous. It took many years before people felt safe eating them regularly.

Today, there are thousands of different varieties, or cultivars. These vary in size, shape, color, and taste.

Some famous types include the San Marzano tomato from Italy.

In the United States, a man named Alexander W. Livingston helped create many modern types. He wanted tomatoes to be smooth, uniform, and sweet. He introduced the Paragon variety in 1870. In places like California, farmers use special ways to grow them. Some use a method called dry-farming to help roots grow deep. This helps the plants find moisture in the soil.
