These tubers store nutrients for the plant to use later. Many people call them a staple food because they are so important to what we eat. In some languages, like French or Dutch, the word for potato means "earth apple."

This name comes from the way the round vegetable looks like a fruit. It is a very helpful crop for the whole world.

Growing a potato plant involves several interesting steps. The plant has hairy stems and leaves with four pairs of leaflets. It produces flowers that can be white, pink, blue, or purple. These flowers are pollinated by insects.

After the flowers, the plant grows small green fruits. These fruits look like tiny green cherry tomatoes. Under the soil, long thin stems called stolons grow. The tips of these stolons thicken to form the potato tubers. These tubers have "eyes" that protect buds for new stems. They also have tiny holes called lenticels so they can breathe.

Potatoes have a very long history in the Americas. Scientists believe they were first grown in southern Peru and northwestern Bolivia.

Farmers domesticated them about 7,000 to 10,000 years ago. The Spanish brought potatoes to Europe in the late 1500s. At first, European farmers were slow to grow them. However, they became very important after the year 1750. They helped the population in Europe grow much larger. Some experts say they helped a quarter of the growth in the Old World.

There are many different facts about how potatoes grow today. There are over 5,000 different varieties of potatoes in the world.

It is called the International Day of Potato. It is celebrated every year on May 30. This day helps us remember how much we rely on this amazing plant. It is a way to celebrate a food that connects people everywhere.
