They are often sweet, sour, or tart and have bright colors. Most berries do not have a hard pit in the middle. Instead, they usually have many small seeds called pips. We use them in many tasty foods like jams, cakes, and pies.

While we use the word "berry" for many fruits, science has a very specific rule for what counts as a real berry.

In science, a botanical berry is a fleshy fruit made from the ovary of one single flower.

The outer part of this ovary grows into the soft, edible part we eat. These fruits do not have a special line to help them split open when they are ripe. Many things we call berries are not actually botanical berries. For example, strawberries and raspberries are called aggregate fruits because they come from many ovaries in one flower.

On the other hand, many things we do not call berries are actually berries in science. Bananas, tomatoes, grapes, and even huge watermelons are all botanical berries.

Early hunter-gatherers used them as a main food source. Later, people learned how to store them for the winter. Native Americans sometimes mixed berries with meat and fats to make something called pemmican.

In Japan, people used special names for berry crops between the 10th and 18th centuries. Today, the strawberry is the most grown berry in the whole world. It is produced at twice the amount of all other berry crops combined.

Learning how to grow better berries is a big part of science.

A scientist named Antoine Nicolas Duchesne studied how strawberries breed. He made important discoveries about how they reproduce sexually. In the 1700s, a French gardener noticed something special about different strawberry types. He saw that planting certain strawberries together made much larger fruit.

Since then, English breeders have made hundreds of new types of strawberries. Blueberries began to be grown for business in the United States over a century ago.

Growing berries can be a hard job for farmers.

Many berries need a certain amount of cold weather to wake up from sleep. For example, cranberries need 2,000 hours of cold to start growing. But if it gets too cold, the plants can die. Blueberries cannot handle temperatures below -29 degrees Celsius.

Farmers must also watch out for birds and diseases like black root rot. Once they are picked, berries must be kept very cold to stay fresh. Raspberries only last a few days, but cranberries can stay good for two to four months.
