It grows on a trailing vine that climbs or crawls along the ground. These plants have wide leaves with three lobes. They also have white or yellow flowers on hairy stalks. The fruit is a special kind of berry called a pepo. A pepo has a thick, hard rind on the outside. Inside, the fleshy part can be red, pink, yellow, or even white.

Most watermelons have many black seeds inside. Some people grow seedless varieties instead.

Growing a watermelon is a long process. The plant needs warm weather to thrive. It grows best in sandy soil that drains water well. First, the plant grows male flowers at the start of the season. Later, female flowers develop on the same plant. This system is called monoecious. Bees help by moving pollen from flower to flower. This is very important for seedless watermelons. Farmers often use three beehives per acre to help these plants.

If there is not enough pollen, the fruit might get a hole inside. This is called hollow heart, but it is still safe to eat.

Watermelons have a very long history. They first came from Africa. Scientists found 6,000-year-old seeds in the Libyan desert. These seeds might be related to the Egusi seeds in Nigeria. People in Sudan and Egypt grew them a long time ago. In fact, Egyptians grew them by 2000 BC. Early watermelons were not sweet like the ones we eat today. They were often bitter and had white flesh.

Over many years, people used breeding to make them sweeter and easier to open.

Many different kinds of watermelons exist today. There are more than 1,000 varieties in the world. One group is called the Citroides group. This includes the citron melon, which has sweet yellow flesh. Another type is the bitter wooly melon. In 1753, a scientist named Carl Linnaeus first described the sweet watermelon. He gave it the name Cucurbita citrullus. Later, in 1836, Heinrich Adolf Schrader changed the name to Citrullus vulgaris.

Today, China is the world leader in growing them. China produces 64% of all the watermelons in the world.

Watermelons are a great way to get water and energy. The fruit is 91% water. It also contains 6% sugar. This makes it a refreshing snack on a hot day. You can eat the fruit raw or turn it into juice. Some people even pickle the fruit. You can even eat the rind if you cook it. In places like the Kalahari Desert, watermelons are a very important source of water for people and animals.
