Watermelons began in Africa. Scientists found old seeds in the Libyan desert. These seeds were 6,000 years old! People in Sudan and Egypt grew them long ago. Early watermelons were not as sweet as today. People used breeding to make them sweeter.

Today, many countries grow them. China is the top producer. They grow 64% of all watermelons. You can eat the fruit raw. You can also make juice or even pickles.
