The fruit has a bumpy or warty skin. It can be long or short. Some types are tiny and only 6 to 10 cm long. Most people eat the fruit while it is still green. At this stage, it is crunchy like a cucumber. It has a very strong, bitter taste.

As the fruit gets older, it changes. It can turn yellow or orange. When it is fully ripe, it becomes soft. The fruit splits open. It shows bright red pulp inside. This red pulp covers the seeds. The ripe fruit and the seeds can be toxic.

Many people use this plant in cooking. In China, it is used in soups and teas. In India, it is often served with yogurt. People can also eat the young leaves and shoots. Some people use it in herbal medicine.
