It comes in many shapes and sizes. Some are ivory or yellow. Some are bright orange. Orange squash has a lot of carotene. This is a natural part of the plant.

When the squash is raw, the inside is solid. But cooking it changes the flesh. You can bake, boil, or steam it. You can even use a microwave. Once cooked, the flesh turns into long strands. These look just like spaghetti noodles. You can eat them with sauce. This makes it a good choice for people who do not eat gluten.

You can also eat the seeds. Just roast them like pumpkin seeds. Spaghetti squash is easy to grow in pots or gardens. The plants have both male and female flowers. The male flowers have long, thin stems. The female flowers are shorter. They have a small round part under the petals. That round part grows into the squash. Raw squash is mostly water. It has very little fat or protein. It provides 31 calories in a single serving.
