It usually has orange flesh and a nice smell. People call this fruit by different names in different places. In North America, it is often called a muskmelon. People in Australia and New Zealand call it a rockmelon. In Southern Africa, it has the name spanspek. These melons are part of a group called Cucumis melo.

There are many ways these melons grow and look. The true European cantaloupe often has a skin that is not very netted. Some types have a deeply ribbed rind like the Prescott group. Other types have a speckled rind called the Saccharinu subgroup. The American cantaloupe is different because it has a strongly netted rind. This netted rind is a pattern on the outside of the fruit. Some melons, like the Japanese muskmelon, look similar but have green flesh.

We do not know exactly where the first cantaloupes grew. They may have started in a region from South Asia to Africa. One source says they were grown in Egypt a long time ago. This might go back to about 2400 BC. The name itself comes from French and Italian words. It relates to Cantalupo, which is a summer estate for the Vatican City. The name was first used in the English language in 1739.

Growing these melons is a huge job for many countries. In 2023, the world produced 29.5 million tonnes of melons. China led the way by producing 49% of that total amount. Cantaloupes are also very good for your body. They are made of 90% water and 8% carbohydrates. One serving of 100 grams gives you 34 calories of food energy. They are a great source of vitamin A and vitamin C.

You can eat cantaloupe in many delicious ways. You can eat it fresh or as a dessert with ice cream. Some people even wrap melon pieces in prosciutto. You can also dry the seeds to eat them as a snack. Always remember to wash and scrub the skin very well. This is important because harmful bacteria like Salmonella can be on the surface. Washing helps keep you safe before you cut into the fruit.
