They belong to a group called macropods. This group includes kangaroos and wallaroos. The name "wallaby" is an informal name. People use it for any macropod smaller than a kangaroo. They are mostly found in Australia and New Guinea. Some wallabies now live in places like New Zealand and Hawaii.

Wallabies have very special ways of moving. Their hind legs are very powerful. They use these legs to bound at high speeds. They can also jump to great heights. These legs help them give strong kicks to stay safe.

A wallaby also has a strong tail. The tail helps them stay balanced and supported. Some wallabies, like the tammar wallaby, use elastic tendons in their ankles. This works like a spring to save energy. This helps them move without using too much muscle force.

Many different types of wallabies exist. There are 19 known species of rock-wallabies.

These animals live among rocks near water. They have special feet to grip the stone. There are also seven species of pademelons. These are small and stocky animals. The dwarf wallaby is the smallest known species. It is a very tiny macropod from New Guinea. Some nail-tail wallabies even have a hard spur on their tail. No one knows what that spur is used for yet.

Learning about wallabies involves many names. The name comes from the Dharug word "walabi."

In the past, people called them brush-kangaroos. Young wallabies are called joeys. Adult males are called bucks, boomers, or jacks. Adult females are called does, flyers, or jills. A group of wallabies is called a mob, a court, or a troupe. These names help people talk about them clearly.

Wallabies are herbivores, so they eat plants. They eat grasses, leaves, and vegetables. They often travel long distances for food.

Water can be hard to find in their homes. Because of this, many wallabies gather near water holes during dry seasons. They also live near humans in cities and farms. This can lead to accidents with cars. They must also watch out for predators like dingoes and foxes.
