Kangaroos move in a very special way. They are the only large mammals that use hopping on two legs to move.

Their big back legs provide the power for these jumps.

They also use a long, muscular tail to help them stay balanced. At slow speeds, they use their tail and front legs like a tripod.

This slow way of moving is called pentapedal locomotion. When they hop at medium speeds, they are very efficient. This means they save energy while they travel.

Female kangaroos have a special pouch called a marsupium.

Because the grass wears their teeth down, they use a process called polyphyodonty. This means new teeth grow in from the back to replace old ones.
