life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The red kangaroo is a truly amazing animal. It is the largest of all kangaroos in the world. It is also the largest land mammal native to Australia. These big animals live across much of the mainland. You can find them in deserts and open grasslands. They usually avoid rainforests and very fertile coasts.

Red kangaroos have a special way of moving. Their legs work much like a stretchy rubber band. A part called the Achilles tendon stretches when they land. This stores energy to help them jump forward. This bouncing motion lets them reach very fast speeds. A male can leap 25 feet in one jump. They can even reach heights of 10 feet.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. A person named A.G. Desmarest first described them in 1822. At first, they were put in a group called Kangurus. Later, in 1842, a scientist named Gould moved them. In 2015, Jackson and Groves changed their group names again. Recent genetic tests in 2019 helped confirm these names.

These animals have many unique physical traits. Males are much larger than the females. They have red-brown fur and can weigh 200 pounds. Large males can even stand over 6 feet tall. Females are smaller and have blue-grey fur. They can weigh about 100 pounds. Their eyes help them see almost a full circle. This means they have a 300-degree range of vision.

Living in dry places is a hard job. Red kangaroos have many ways to stay cool. They can pant or sweat to lower their heat. They also lick their arms to stay cool. To save water, their kidneys work very hard. They can reabsorb water from their urine. This helps them survive without drinking for a long time. They get most of their moisture from green plants.
