A male is called a stag or a hart. A female is called a hind. Stags are much larger than hinds.

These animals are ruminants, which means they have a four-chambered stomach. They eat their food in two separate stages to digest it. This helps them get energy from the plants they eat. They also have an even number of toes on each hoof. This makes them similar to goats or cattle.

Only the stags grow antlers, which are made of real bone.

These antlers start growing in the spring. A soft skin called velvet covers them while they grow. This velvet carries oxygen and nutrients to the new bone. As the stag's testosterone levels drop in the autumn, the velvet is shed. The antlers then stop growing and begin to harden. Most stags shed their antlers every year at the end of winter.

In the summer, their coats are often a reddish-brown color. Some deer even have spots on their backs during this time. When autumn arrives, they grow a much thicker coat of hair. This thick hair acts like a blanket to keep them warm in winter. Their winter coats can look grey or dark brown. To get rid of their old summer hair, they rub against trees.

They live in Europe, the Caucasus Mountains, and parts of Western Asia. They are also found in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa. In fact, they are the only deer species living in Africa. Some red deer live in the Carpathian Mountains of Central Europe. These deer can grow quite large. The Caspian red deer in Asia Minor is one of the largest types.
