It is also called the Japanese deer or the northern spotted deer. In China, people call it the plum blossom deer. This is because the white spots on its back look like flowers. Most deer lose their spots as they grow up. However, the sika deer is one of the few that keeps them.

These deer live in many different kinds of forests. They like places with thick plants and clear areas to eat.

These animals have many ways to live and act. Sika deer can be active all day long. In places with many people, they might stay awake only at night. They can also move to different places when the seasons change. In the winter, they might move to lower areas in the mountains.

Females usually live in groups with their young fawns. Males often spend most of their time living alone. During the mating season, large herds of deer gather together. The males are very vocal and can make over ten different sounds. These sounds range from soft whistles to loud screams.

Scientists use DNA to study how these deer are related to others. The sika deer belongs to a group called the genus Cervus. This group includes the red deer from Eurasia and the wapiti, or elk, from North America.

Some deer can even crossbreed to make hybrids. In the Scottish Highlands, sika deer have mixed with native red deer. This can be a problem for the local deer families. However, sika deer in the United States cannot breed with white-tailed deer. This is because those deer belong to a different group called Odocoileus.

History shows that sika deer have faced many hard times. In the 19th century, people hunted them so much they almost died out. This happened from northern Vietnam all the way to the Russian Far East.

Good news came in the mid-20th century when new laws protected them. From the 1950s to the 1980s, their numbers grew very quickly. In Japan, there are now over three million sika deer. This large number happened because the Japanese wolf is extinct. Without the wolf to hunt them, the deer population grew very large.

Learning about sika deer helps us see how nature stays in balance. In Nara, Japan, these deer are even called "bowing deer." They have learned to bow their heads to people for food.

People there even see them as messengers of the Shinto gods. It is important to remember that bowing can also be a signal. A deer might bow its head before it tries to headbutt something. This is how they play or show who is the boss. Just like goats, they use this move to act tough.
