It is a species of deer that comes from Eurasia. There is also a different kind called the Persian fallow deer. Some scientists think they are two separate species. Other scientists think they are just different versions of the same deer. These animals are important because they have lived in many different lands for a very long time.

History shows us how these deer moved across the world. A long time ago, during the Pleistocene, they lived in much of Europe. Around 130,000 to 115,000 years ago, they were spread out very widely. When the climate changed during the last ice age, their numbers dropped. They survived in special places called refugia. One such place was in Anatolia, which is in modern-day Turkey.

Fallow deer are connected to human history in surprising ways. In the past, people moved these deer using trade networks during the Roman era. This helped them reach new places outside of their original homes. Today, you might see them in zoos or in wild herds in places like New Zealand. Even though they have moved around, they still remind us of the ancient animals that lived in Europe long ago.
