These animals are the smallest deer in the whole world. There are two different species that belong to the genus Pudu. The northern pudu lives in places like Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. The southern pudu lives in southern Chile and south-western Argentina.

Because they live on the slopes of the Andes Mountain Range, some people call them the "Chilean mountain goat." They are very important animals to study in their forest homes.

Pudus have a very interesting way of living and eating. They are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. They eat many things like vines, leaves, shrubs, and even tree bark.

Because their food has a lot of water in it, they can go a long time without drinking. To reach food, they might stand on their hind legs. They can even climb tree stumps or bend bamboo shoots to reach high leaves. These small deer are also very good at climbing and jumping. If a predator chases them, they run in a zigzag path to escape.

Scientists have been studying these deer for a long time. An English naturalist named John Edward Gray first named the genus Pudu in 1850.

The name "pudú" comes from the Mapudungun language. This is the language of the Mapuche people from Chile. They live in the Los Lagos Region of south-central Chile. These deer are part of a larger group called the Cervidae family. This is the same family that includes all other deer.

There are many specific facts about how a pudu looks. The southern pudu is slightly larger than the northern one.

A southern pudu can weigh up to 13.5 kilograms. They have short, slender legs and a stocky body. Males have short, spiked antlers that they shed every year. Females do not have antlers at all.

In the wild, these deer usually live for 8 to 10 years. One pudu was recorded living for 15 years and 9 months.

Learning about the pudu helps us understand how to protect nature. The southern pudu is listed as near threatened on the IUCN Red List.

This is because they are losing their rainforest homes to farming and logging. People are working hard to help them through special programs. For example, some deer have been moved to Nahuel Huapi National Park in Argentina. Scientists use radio collars to track them and keep them safe. By protecting the forests, we help these tiny deer stay in the wild.
