Some camels can even be black or nearly white. They have many special features like long, curved necks. They also have narrow chests and long hair on their shoulders. These traits help them live in very dry places.

Living in the desert is a hard job for most animals. The dromedary has many ways to handle the heat. Its single hump is made of fat stored in fibrous tissue.

This fat helps the animal survive on desert plants and foliage. The dromedary is amazing at saving water in its body. It can survive losing more than 30% of its total water. Even its blood is special for this task. The red blood cells are shaped like ovals. This shape helps the blood flow easily when the camel is thirsty.

Humans have worked with these camels for a very long time. They were likely first domesticated in the Arabian Peninsula about 4,000 years ago.

The dromedary belongs to a group called Camelidae. This group also includes the two-humped Bactrian camel. These two types of camels can even breed together. The babies they make are called hybrids. These hybrids are often larger and stronger than their parents. They can carry even heavier loads than a single camel.

People rely on dromedaries for many important things every day. In North Africa, some tribes use their meat and milk.

They are also very useful for riding across long distances. Many people use them as pack animals to carry heavy supplies.

Dromedaries usually live in herds of about 20 animals. A single dominant male usually leads the whole group.

Watching them move is interesting because they move both legs on one side at once. This makes them very steady on the sand.
