History shows a long relationship between humans and this species. Dromedaries were likely first domesticated in the Arabian Peninsula roughly 4,000 years ago. While they once lived naturally in the wild in places like the Sahara, they have not occurred naturally in the wild for nearly 2,000 years. Today, they are kept in semiarid to arid regions across the Old World. This includes parts of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Thar desert in India and Pakistan. There are even feral populations living in Australia.

Because they are closely related, dromedaries and Bactrian camels can interbreed. This process creates hybrids that are often larger and stronger than their parents.
In social settings, dromedaries typically live in herds of about 20 individuals.
