The caracal is a remarkable wild cat found in many dry places.

Watching a caracal hunt is quite a sight.
People have studied these cats for a long time.
There are three different types of caracals today. These are called subspecies. The Southern caracal lives in Southern and East Africa. The Northern caracal lives in North and West Africa. The Asiatic caracal lives in Asia. Male caracals are usually larger than the females. A male can weigh up to 18 kilograms. Females are smaller and weigh around 15 kilograms. In the wild, these cats are very secretive. They are often nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. They prefer to hunt when the air is cool.
Caracals have a very interesting way of living. They are territorial animals that like to live alone. Sometimes they live in pairs, but usually they are solitary. Mother caracals stay with their kittens for a while. A mother can have a litter of one to six kittens.
The caracal (*Felis caracal*) is a medium-sized wild cat with a robust build.

The life cycle of a caracal begins with a short pregnancy. Gestation lasts between two and three months. A female gives birth to a litter of one to six kittens. These kittens are born with their eyes and ears shut. Their claws are also not yet retractable. By the third or fourth week, their ears stand up and their claws can be drawn inside. Kittens begin to play together around five or six weeks of age. Most juveniles leave their mothers when they are nine to ten months old. In captivity, these cats can live for nearly 16 years.
