Recent research has used DNA to understand the cat's history. Phylogenetic analysis of nuclear DNA shows that the Felidae family began in Asia. This occurred during the late Miocene period. Studies of mitochondrial DNA suggest a radiation of these cats around 11 million years ago. Pallas's cats are estimated to have diverged from a common ancestor with the genus Prionailurus. This divergence happened between 6 and 7 million years ago. This genetic data helps scientists place the Pallas's cat accurately within the tree of life.
