Antlers are amazing structures found on animals in the deer family.

They are made of bone, cartilage, skin, and even nerves. Most deer species only have antlers on their males. However, reindeer are a special exception to this rule. Both male and female reindeer grow antlers to help them survive.

These bony growths are very different from horns found on sheep or cattle. Horns are permanent and covered in a tough material called keratin. Antlers are unique because they are shed and regrown every single year.

Growing these large structures is a very busy job for a deer.

Antlers grow from a specific spot on the skull called a pedicle. While they are growing, a soft skin called velvet covers them. This velvet acts like a delivery system for blood and nutrients. The bone grows very quickly from the very tip of the antler. It starts out as soft cartilage before it turns into hard bone. Once the antler reaches its full size, the velvet is lost. The bone then becomes dead tissue until it eventually falls off.

Scientists have studied how these bones develop over many years.

A study from 2019 found that eight specific genes help make antlers. These genes are usually linked to bone cancer in other animals. This suggests that growing antlers is like a very controlled form of cancer growth. In many places, the length of the day tells the deer when to grow them. In the tropics, deer might shed their antlers at different times. Some deer, like the Bornean muntjac, may never shed them at all.

Antlers serve two very important roles in the lives of deer.

First, they are used as weapons when males fight for mates. Second, they act as beautiful ornaments to attract females. Males with the largest antlers are often the most successful at finding mates. They can also help protect the deer from hungry predators. In Yellowstone National Park, wolves are much less likely to attack elk that have antlers.

Having antlers can be a hard job because they require so much food to grow.

Even though they are bone, antlers are not like the bones in your legs.

They have a lot of collagen, which is a type of protein. This makes them tougher and less stiff than a human bone. This toughness helps them survive the heavy hits during a fight. Because they are not part of the main skeleton, they are not meant to hold up the body. Instead, they are specialized tools for competition and survival. Every year, the deer starts with a clean slate to grow a brand new set.
