Antlers are bony parts that grow on the heads of deer.

Most deer males have them. Reindeer are the only ones where females have them too.

Antlers grow from a spot on the skull called a pedicle. While they grow, a soft skin called velvet covers them. This velvet brings blood and food to the growing bone. Antlers grow very fast. They grow from the tip. At first, they are made of cartilage, which is a soft tissue. Later, this turns into hard bone. Once they are full size, the velvet falls off. The bone then dies. Eventually, the antlers fall off. This happens every year for many deer.

Males use antlers for two main jobs. They use them as weapons to fight other males. They also use them to look strong to females.

In some places, antlers also help deer stay safe from predators. For example, elk with antlers are less likely to be attacked by wolves.
