Opossums are interesting members of the marsupial order Didelphimorphia. This group is the largest order of marsupials in the Western Hemisphere. They include 126 different species within 18 genera. Most of these animals live in the Americas. The Virginia opossum is the only species found in the United States and Canada.

People often call them "possums" in North America. This is a shorter name for the same animal. Some people think they are related to Australian possums. However, those Australian animals belong to a different group entirely.

Many opossums are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. Their diet can include insects, rodents, birds, eggs, and fruit. Some species even eat grain or small snails. The water opossum, or yapok, is very unusual. It is the only semi-aquatic marsupial living today. It uses webbed hindlimbs to dive for crayfish and mollusks.

Some large opossums have a special skill. They are immune to the venom of pit vipers and rattlesnakes. This allows them to eat these dangerous snakes as food.

Opossums have a unique way of growing and raising their young. As marsupials, they have a special reproductive system. Many females have a pouch called a marsupium. The babies are born very early after only 12 to 14 days. These tiny offspring must crawl into the pouch to find a teat. They nurse there until they are weaned between 70 and 125 days.

A female can give birth to litters of up to 20 young. However, not all of them will survive to adulthood. Most wild opossums live a short life of one to two years.

History tells us a lot about the name "opossum." The word comes from the Powhatan language. It was first recorded between 1607 and 1611 by John Smith and William Strachey. Smith described them as having a head like a pig and a tail like a rat.

The Powhatan word likely meant "white dog" or "dog-like beast." Scientists also study them to understand ancient animals. Some call them "living fossils" because they help us study early mammal conditions. Their oldest fossils date back about 20 million years to the early Miocene.

Opossums have many clever ways to survive in the wild. They are usually solitary and like to stay in dark areas. Because they are nocturnal, they are most active at night.

If they feel threatened, they might "play possum." This is an involuntary response, meaning they cannot control it. They mimic the look and smell of a dead animal to stay safe. Their eyes close and they may produce a foul-smelling fluid. This can last from a few minutes to four hours.

After the danger passes, they usually wake up with a small twitch of their ears.
