A fruit is a special part of a flowering plant. In science, it is the structure that holds seeds. This part grows from the ovary of a flower after it has been pollinated.

Fruits are very important for plants to survive. They help plants spread their seeds to new places. Many animals and humans eat fruits for nutrition. This creates a helpful relationship where animals get food and plants get to spread their seeds.

How does a fruit grow? It all starts with pollination. This is when pollen moves to the flower's stigma and travels down into the ovary.

Inside the ovary, a process called double fertilization happens. One sperm cell joins with an egg to make a zygote. This zygote will eventually become the embryo of a seed. A second sperm helps create endosperm, which is food for the growing embryo. As these seeds develop, the ovary wall begins to change and ripen.

The wall of the fruit is called the pericarp. This layer surrounds and protects the seeds inside. In many fruits, the pericarp has three different layers. The outer layer is the exocarp. The middle layer is the mesocarp. The innermost layer is the endocarp.

Some fruits are fleshy, like a juicy peach. Other fruits have a hard covering, like a nut. Some fruits even have a pointed tip, which scientists call being "beaked."

Scientists group fruits in different ways. Simple fruits grow from one single flower. Aggregate fruits come from one flower that has many separate parts. Multiple fruits grow from many different flowers joined together.

However, many vegetables are actually fruits in science. A tomato is a fruit and a berry. A cucumber and a pumpkin are also fruits. Even corn is a type of fruit called a caryopsis. In science, a nut is a fruit, but a seed is something else. This shows how much there is to discover about the plants around us.
