Flowering plant

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Flowering plants are a huge and amazing group of living things. Scientists call them angiosperms. This name comes from Greek words meaning "container" and "seed." This is because their seeds stay inside a fruit.

These plants are the most diverse land plants on Earth. There are about 300,000 known species in this group. They include tiny floating plants and giant forest trees. Most of them make food from sunlight. This way of living is called being a photosynthetic autotroph.

These plants have a special way they work to grow. They use flowers to make new seeds. Inside the flower, there are male and female cells. The male cells become pollen grains. The female part has a small sac called an embryo sac. After fertilization, a part called the endosperm forms. This provides food for the growing baby plant.

They also have special tubes to move water. These tubes are called vessel elements. They are stacked end to end to form long paths.

Flowering plants have a very long history. Their ancestors split from other seed plants over 300 million years ago. During the Cretaceous period, they grew very fast. They became the most common plants on the planet.

By the end of the Cretaceous, 66 million years ago, they even replaced conifers as the main trees. Some fossils show beetles were already helping them long ago. Scientists use a system called APG to group them. This system was updated in 2016 to include 64 different orders.

There are many different types of these plants. The largest are huge trees in Australia and Southeast Asia. The smallest are tiny duckweeds that float on water.

Some plants, like sundews, are even carnivorous. They catch insects to get nutrients. Most plants live in many places, from land to the sea. Some live in very salty or very acid places. There are 416 different families of these plants. The biggest family is the daisy family, which has 22,750 species.

We depend on flowering plants every single day. They provide almost all of our plant-based food. Rice, maize, and wheat give us half of our calories. These three are all part of the grass family.

We also use them for wood, paper, and cotton. Many plants give us sugar or medicine. People also grow them to make gardens look beautiful. Flowers play a big role in many human cultures.
