Flowering plants are a huge group of living things. We call them angiosperms. This name comes from Greek words. It means their seeds are kept inside a container, like a fruit.

These plants are very diverse. There are about 300,000 known species. Some are tiny plants that float in water. Others are giant trees.

Most of them use sunlight to make food. This is called being a photosynthetic autotroph. This means they make their own food from light.

Flowering plants have special parts. They have flowers to make new seeds. They also have xylem. This is a set of tubes that carries water. In these plants, the tubes are called vessel elements.

We rely on these plants every day. They provide most of our food. Rice, maize, and wheat are all types of grasses. We also use them for wood, paper, and cotton. Many people grow them to make a world look beautiful.
