Orchids are a very large group of plants.

Haeckel Orchidae
Haeckel Orchidae

They belong to the Orchidaceae family. This family has about 28,000 different species. They live on every continent except Antarctica. Most orchids love warm, tropical places.

Many orchids are epiphytes. These are plants that live on trees. They do not grow in the dirt. Instead, they use roots to hold on. Some orchids even have no leaves. They use their roots to make food from light. Other orchids use tiny fungi to help them eat.

Orchid flowers are very special.

They have three petals and three sepals. One petal is different. It is called a labellum, or a lip. This lip helps insects land on the flower. Some orchids even trick insects to visit them.

Orchids make very tiny seeds.

A single pod can have over a million seeds! These seeds are like dust. They need a partner to grow. They work with fungi in the soil. This helps the tiny seeds start to live.
