The Fabaceae family is a huge group of plants.

Gymnocladus-dioicus
Gymnocladus-dioicus

People often call them legumes. This name comes from the Latin word for bean. This family is the third largest on land. It has nearly 20,000 known species. These plants can be giant trees or small herbs. Some can even be vines that twist around things.

Many legumes are important foods for humans. You might eat peas, beans, or peanuts. Soybeans and chickpeas are also in this family.

Most of these plants have colorful flowers. Insects visit these flowers to help them grow.

These plants have a special way to stay healthy. They work with tiny living things called rhizobia.

These helpers live in parts of the roots called nodules. The rhizobia take nitrogen gas from the air. Then, they change it into food for the plant. This set of steps is called nitrogen fixation. It helps the plant grow well in the soil.
